THE THINGS WE LEARN WHEN WE'RE DEAD REVIEW

I haven’t reviewed anything in a while, so I thought I’d talk about a recent read of mine, which was The Things We Learn When We’re Dead by Charlie Laidlaw. It is an adult, contemporary fiction novel that has been compared to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and The Wizard of Oz.

Rating: 5/5 stars

Sarah’s Sucky Summary: When Lorna Love accidentally steps in front of a car and dies, she’s transported to a spaceship HVN, or Heaven, where she meets various celebrity lookalike staff and God, who’s a bit of a hippy. As she deals with regenerating from her accident, Lorna’s memory comes back in bits and pieces that assemble themselves into the reason she was brought aboard in the first place.

I loved reading this book. I don’t tend to stray from YA too often, but I am glad I picked this one. It’s lighthearted while dealing with some heavy subject material, descriptive, and hefty enough to make you feel like you’ve done something after reading it.I liked how real Lorna was – she’s a smart and ambitious girl that stands up for what she believes in. But she has feelings too, and despite her surname, she is rarely lucky in love. She reacts to her situation about as realistically as one can – and I admire how she bites back instead of taking things as they are.

I thought the whole backstory with HVN and God was really well thought out, and I’m very satisfied with the ending. This book was amazing – and I highly recommend it as a summer read for anyone who wants something different than your standard novel. The sci-fi elements are subtle enough that they don’t take over the setting.

I saw another review on Goodreads where they made the comment that based on the cover, you can tell this is a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and I completely agree (and love the cover – even if I just now noticed the hamster in the window lol).
